The controversial deputy, Kit Malthouse revealed that he and London Mayor Boris Johnson had eradicated control of the London police force from the Home Office and were now in control of Britain’s biggest police force.
Tory supporting, police commissioner Paul Stephenson has now been forced to announce he will be making a public statement reasserting his groups independence.
He will be backed by Ian Johnston, president of the Police Superintendents Association (PSA), who will also voice concerns that the ‘operational independence’ of senior officers is being threatened by individuals seeking ‘political control’ of the police.
Hugh Orde, president of the Association of Chief Police Officers distanced himself from Tory policy by stating Tory plans for elected police commissioners as put forward in proposals by the parties leader David Cameron’s could result in the BNP ending up in charge of policing.
Public confidence in the Metropolitan police is at an all time low after officers were caught on film murdering innocent civilians during protesters, killing vulnerable civilians in custody and abusing pre-teen children through stop and search under the guise of anti-terrorism legislation. The Police struggle to lose its institutional racist label persists because despite strong protestations from Trevor Phillips the head of the governments beleaguered the Equality and Human Rights Commission – most rank and file officers in the force remain steadfastly anti-African.
Malthouse took over from one of Boris Johnson’s many former disgraced deputy mayors. Ian Clement, 44, has been charged with several counts of fraud over the misuse of public funds. He was forced to resign from the post after it was revealed he fraudulently used public funds for personal expenditure, including work on his car and dining with his 23-year old girlfriend, the Tory agent Claire Dowson. Clement is the third deputy mayor to quit since Mr Johnson took office.
