Emma came from a background in media and public relations and was Head of Ligali's front line Media Affairs department.

The remit of this division included the promotion of community cohesion and self determination through the media by creating resources of diverse historical, cultural and political interest for and by African people. To this aim she was involved with Ligali producing several films, writing articles and organising events. 

In her role as Head of Media Affairs, Emma investigated and challenged inaccurate and anti-African misrepresentations of African people and culture. She was also a senior journalist and editor for the Ligali website.
