Study claims African British men are sexually risky

A study has claimed that African British men have nine times as many lovers during their lifetime as Pakistani men. African men are reported as having an average of nine sexual partners, compared with European men who had six.

The so-called research was published as part of an article in medical journal, The Lancet. The study of British sexual habits by ethnic group reports Indian men as having two lovers and Pakistani men only one in their lifetime. European women were reported as having an average of five sexual partners, African women four and Indian and Pakistani women each only one sexual partner.

The study was led by Dr Kevin Fenton, of University College London and follows analysis of the second British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles in which men and women aged between 16 and 44 were questioned about their sexual habits.

Fenton concluded;

- African men are reported as having the highest incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and a higher level of risky sexual behaviour such as having unprotected intercourse and paying for sex.

- There was a higher level of risk behaviour among European women than in other ethnic groups, but they were less likely to admit to STIs than African women.

- On average African Caribbean women, African men, European men and women are all said to lose their virginity at 17 years old, African Caribbean men at 15 and African women at 18.

Kevin Fenton

Fenton said: "For the first time we have a clearer understanding of the complex relationship between the sexual lifestyles of Britain's main ethnic groups and the risk of sexually transmitted infections... Sexual behaviour alone doesn't explain the differences in STIs among ethnic groups...’

He continued ‘Cultural factors, age and marriage patterns, and varying levels of infection in different communities are all likely to be important in explaining differences.’

African people have been labelled sexually promiscuous for far too long. Much of this perception stems from the colonial era and subsequent misconceptions of African cutlures. This recent attempt to paint our community as sexually irresponsible fits in with racist notions that caricature African people as immoral sexual deviants who actively spread sexual disease throughout the world population. Claims that we are more likely to use prostitutes are outrageous, offensive and inaccurate.
