Last night on 22 June 2017, whilst watching Question Time (QT) with my family we were expecting the first set of questions to talk about the horrific terrorist attack at Finsbury Park on 19th June. We also expected a continuation of the discussion addressing the tragedy at the Grenfell Tower started last week which only lasted 12 minutes.
I was angered at how the host David Dimbleby deliberately deprioritised both these matters of national importance. The fact that this morning the main headline addressing last night’s QT is Dimbleby’s ousting of an audience member is outrageous. The fact that the governments Justice Secretary, David Lidington was present on the panel but did not feel to first focus on these two grave injustices was morally repugnant.
Overall, only one subject was discussed and it was divided into four themes – the government’s mandate, Brexit, Jeremy Corbyn and the DUP payoff. These interrelated topics were collectively allocated 45 minutes. It was only towards the end of the programme that the question “Is austerity responsible for the death of the Grenfell residents?” was asked. The response on this issue were then superficially talked about for approximately 10 minutes.
Outrageously there was nothing said on the terrorist attack at Finsbury Park which claimed the life of Makram Ali and injured several people. The panel also included a pugnacious Daily Mail writer, a tabloid partially responsible for radicalising white supremacists across the UK and promoting Afriphobia and Islamophobia. There was no Muslim and/or credible grassroot representative (eg. Akala, Dr Ama Biney, Ishmahil Blagrove, Dr Suzella Rox, Prof Hakim Adi, Jennifer G. Robinson, Gary Younge, Awula Serwah, Prof Gus John etc) invited to offer political comment on the matter, there was not even an expert on white supremacist radicalisation. I believe the decision to format the show in this manner was motivated by race, religious and class discriminatory practices within the BBC. It reveals a huge disconnect with the political concerns faced by millions of us living in what is now a socially and politically segregated, second class Britain for migrants and their descendants. If you will not reform the QT format in order to make it more relevant to the concerns of modern Britain then surely its time it ought to go…
