A Coalition of African people and African –led organisations have come together to raise awareness of the UN international Decade for People of African Descent and ensure that it is meaningfully marked. With underlying themes in Recognition, Justice and Development, we aim to make sure that the UK, a member of the UN, lives up to its obligations under Resolution 69/16. We want to begin tangible steps to address the many socio-political inequalities faced across the UK, and we will do this by developing local, national, regional and international networks, campaigns and other activities. Our first step is to invite our communities to this event for an interactive discussion on how we might go forward.

The IDPAD Coalition UK event takes place this Saturday the 25th March 2017 between, 10 – 5pm at Room G06, Roberts Building, Sir Ambrose Fleming Lecture Theatre, Malet Street, London. WC1E 6BT

1. The objectives of the UN Decade are to:

• Promote respect, protection and fulfilment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by people of African Descent, as recognised in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;
• Promote a greater knowledge of and respect for the diverse heritage, culture and contribution of people of African descent to the development of Britain and other societies around the world;
• Adopt and strengthen national, regional and international legal frameworks according to the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) and to ensure their full and effective implementation.

What is the aim of IDPAD Coalition UK?

1) To ensure that 2015-2024 is meaningfully marked as the International Decade for people of African descent and that the UK, a member of the UN, lives up to its obligations under UN Resolution 69/16 , and begins to take tangible steps including legislation to address the myriad of socio-political inequalities faced across the UK by people of African heritage.
2) To support African people and African-led organisations working to raise awareness of the Decade and mark it in meaningful ways around the theme Recognition, Justice and Development.
3) To develop local, national, regional and international networks, campaigns and other activities for the full implementation of the UN International Decade for People of African Descent.
