UNIA Blue Plaque unveiling is a success

On Wednesday 17th August 2011 Narrative Eye successfully unveiled the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) Blue plaque to commemorate the presence and work of this organisation in London from 1935 to 1940.


The unveiling of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) Plaque was placed on the wall of No.2 Beaumont Crescent W14 9LX. This location marked the offices where Marcus Garvey and UNIA members conducted their important work. The plaque was recognised as a significant contribution to the rich history of the local area and Britain as a whole; ensuring that the great work of the UNIA in this country cannot be denied or forgotten.

The event was organized by Narrative Eye who is a dynamic organisation committed to creating and promoting the richness of African British history and literature. The organisation which comprises of a team of historians and researchers works to raise the level of cultural awareness about the experience of African people in Britain.

Paying homage

The Master of Ceremony at the unveiling was Muna Brown with speeches by Linton Kwesi Johnson and Professor Gus John. There was a Libation ceremony led by Elder Bini Brown from the African Caribbean Self Help Organisation (ACSHO) whose words of inspiration were warmly welcomed by the three hundred strong gathering. Moments of silence were held in honour of paying homage and respect to Marcus Garvey and his work for African liberation.

Narrative Eye thanked all those who attended on the anniversary of the birth of Marcus Mosiah Garvey and helped make the day one to remember. They encourage people of the community to visit the plaque and acknowledge where great work once took place.
